Reddit shadowban: how to check if you're shadowbanned, and how to avoid it

You write a careful comment, it gets zero votes and zero replies, and the next one does too. Either nobody cares, or nobody can see it. On Reddit, the second happens more often than people think, and it happens to founders and brands more than anyone, because what they post tends to look like what spam filters are built to catch.

How to check if you’re shadowbanned

Check the whole account:

1. Open a private or incognito window where you’re not logged in.
2. Go to https://www.reddit.com/user/YOURUSERNAME.
3. If you see the profile normally, you’re not shadowbanned sitewide. If it says the page wasn’t found or the account is suspended, but you can see it fine when logged in, you likely are.

Check a single comment or post:

1. Copy the comment’s permalink.
2. Open it in the logged-out window.
3. If it’s missing, or shows as [removed], it was removed, either by the subreddit’s moderators, AutoModerator or Reddit’s spam filter. Your account can be perfectly fine while individual comments disappear.

Shadowban vs. the other ways comments disappear

It’s worth knowing which one you’ve hit, because the fix differs.

Most “shadowbans” founders report are actually the last three: silent removals by filters or AutoModerator on an account that’s fine.

Why brand and founder accounts get caught

The signals Reddit’s filters and moderators react to are mostly things marketers do by default:

• The same domain in many comments. Linking your site repeatedly is the strongest spam signal there is.
• A new account posting straight into big subs. Many subs remove comments from accounts under a certain age or karma automatically.
• Only ever talking about one product. A history that’s 90% about your own tool looks like what it is.
• Similar text across comments. Copy-pasting the same pitch, or lightly rewording it, gets flagged.
• Bursts of activity. Twenty comments in an hour from a quiet account.
• Several accounts from one network. Multiple accounts on the same IP or device upvoting each other is vote manipulation, and it’s the fastest route to a sitewide ban.
• Bought or shared accounts. Aged accounts sold for marketing share signals with other banned accounts.

How to appeal

If the whole account is shadowbanned, use Reddit’s official appeals form at reddit.com/appeals while logged in. Be short and factual: say you’re a real person, what you use the account for, and that you’ll follow the rules. Don’t argue. Don’t create a new account while you wait. That’s ban evasion, and it makes the original ban permanent.

For a subreddit ban, message that sub’s moderators politely. For silent removals, there’s nothing to appeal. Change what you’re doing.

How to avoid it in the first place

• Be a normal participant. Most of your comments should be useful answers that never mention your product.
• Link sparingly. The product name is usually enough, since people will search for it. Link only when someone asks or it’s genuinely the answer.
• Read each subreddit’s rules before posting. Many state exactly what self-promotion they allow.
• Disclose your affiliation. “I work on X” is fine in most technical subs and prevents the worst outcome: a mod finding out on their own.
• Write every comment fresh. No templates.
• Never trade upvotes, buy accounts or run account networks. There’s no safe version of this.
